Worldwide Toilet Sanitation Problem Leads to 443 Million School Days Lost

School is said to be the second home of the children, as the teachers share not only the vital knowledge they need to grow to be a better and intelligent person, but also the proper way to live a safe and quality life. But sometimes there are different factors that hinder to learn, be safe and maintain sanitation.

Based on the survey initiated by World Health Organization (WHO), students or children globally, lost almost 443 Million school days each year because of unsanitary toilets and other improper hygiene practices. The lost day value or the number of sick days is equivalent to primary and secondary school classrooms in the Philippines, empty for a about a month.

Sickness due to inadequate toilet sanitation and improper hygiene practices includes diarrhea, bacterial problems, viruses and other related infections. These diseases can lead to poor learning capacity, lesser physical functionality, and even death. So, 443 Million school days each year is evaluated.

Dr. Luisa Efren of Philippine Public Health Association (PPHA), shared that the simple act of proper toilet sanitation can help prevent the spread of these germs. However, children continue to be at risk from these deadly diseases because many households still use ordinary laundry bleach to clean their toilet bowls, which is not enough to kill all toilet germs.

A toilet that looks clean to the naked eye may not necessarily be free from germs and bacteria. So, it is very important to properly sanitize all surfaces using a germ-kill expert with proven efficacy in eliminating bacteria, and not just any ordinary laundry bleach,” Dr. Efren warned.

For three consecutive three years, Unilever Philippines through its germ-kill expert brand Domex, has been working with UNICEF and PPHA to champion the One Million Clean Toilets Movement. This advocacy program aims to educate Filipinos on proper toilet sanitation,  and the need for sanitized schooland household toilets to keep their families safe, specially the children against disease-causing germs.

That's why on World Toilet Day, November 13, all are invited to join the One Million Clean Toilets Movement, to fight against disease causing germs to save lives, one clean toilet at a time.
You can help by spreading awareness on the sanitation issue caused unsanitary toilets by sharing the “Sick Days” video on You Tube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypMNHyUwQOQ).
